Learn How to Protect a Garage Floor

There are several different ways to protect garage floors.

Garage floors encounter a lot of different things. From road salt, engine oil, and dirt and mud tracked in from outdoors, all these and more can damage its appearance. However, there are several different ways to protect garage floors from further abuse and keep them looking fresh, clean, and tidy.

Epoxy floor coating

Epoxy coating is an excellent choice for covering garage floor imperfections. It does a superior job repelling stains and spills and makes cleanups easy. Brighten up any dull garage floor by using a solid color. Color flakes added to the epoxy give the floor a speckled, professional look. Epoxy floor coatings are durable but can be sensitive to abrasive cleaning products.

Although plenty of epoxy coatings are available at big-box stores, most won’t last more than a few years. Professional installers know how to properly prep garage floors before applying a two-part epoxy to ensure the floors are long-lasting. Its cure time for foot traffic is 12 hours and 72 hours for vehicles.

Polyaspartic floor coating

Similar to polyurethane, polyaspartic floor coatings are another choice for garage floor protection. Slightly more expensive than epoxy, this floor coating is gaining popularity. However, it’s durable, easy to clean, and cures quicker than epoxy.

Polyaspartic floor coatings are more UV resistant and hold their color much better than epoxy. However, since it sets quickly, it is a bit more difficult for the DIY-er to install. Cure time for foot traffic is only 2 hours and only 24 hours for a vehicle.

Garage floor tiles

Floor tiles are an excellent way to protect garage floors. They come in two main styles; interlocking and peel and stick. These are usually made of porcelain or vinyl and come in varying degrees of difficulty to install. Porcelain tiles have a longer lifespan than vinyl but are more challenging to install. A benefit of garage floor tiles is there isn’t much of a cure time, and several colors and patterns are available.

Floor mats

Floor mats are the most basic, economical, and easiest to install garage floor protection. They can be used in high-traffic areas to limit the amount of dirt and grime on garage floors. Floor mats can also be positioned under vehicles to catch any fluids that may leak. However, they lose their purpose if left dirty and unmaintained.

Hire a garage floor coating professional

The easiest method is hiring a professional to ensure the job is done correctly. Proper prepping of garage floors is essential for long-lasting quality. However, the job could be done improperly without expert knowledge of how to complete it. In addition, working with coatings to protect garage floors can be messy and difficult to manage.
